War has come to the steppe, and it doesn't look like it's going away.
A surprise attack left the enemy humbled and made them shy away from their own shadows. The aggressors are not in a hurry; they are just getting comfortable in their new territory and amassing reinforcements for their new thrust forward. The invaders and their bosses are willing to pay a high enough price for victory. They even release and conscript prisoners who can hold their own on the battlefield. But hey, if they won't bring the fight, we'll take it to them. The southerners don't like our methods. We raid their supply trains, sabotage camps, rustle entire herds of livestock, and target officers. And, naturally, we loot too. Incidentally, our ranks of not-quite law-abiding procurement specialists have just been augmented.
