Civilization has fallen, and the virus that turns people into raging killers has become endemic in the population, sabotaging any attempts to rebuild society. Amelie has heard it all before. Nettle tea. Special prayers. Blood transfusions. Everyone has a plan for saving humanity, and all of them are bollocks. Now her old flame Pingali has shown up with a new friend claiming the key to a cure can be found in some notebooks abandoned in a university laboratory. All they have to do is sneak into the heavily fortified New London enclave and steal them. Amelie doesn't believe it, but as long as Pingali pays her, she's up for a heist. Problem is, plenty of others know about the notebooks too, and soon the hunt for the notebooks leads Amelie and Pingali into a deadly fight between a paramilitary gang and the cult of the Glass Eaters, all in the decaying hulk of the tallest building in London: the Spire.
